Hagia Sophia ( "Holy Wisdom"), located in Istanbul, Turkey, is one of the most iconic monuments in the world. Originally built in 537 AD as a Christian cathedral under Emperor Justinian I of the Byzantine Empire, it was the world’s largest cathedral for nearly a thousand years.
After the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople (1453), it was converted into a mosque, and Islamic features like minarets and calligraphy were added. In 1935, it became a museum under Turkey’s secular reforms, but in 2020, it was reclassified as a mosque again.
Hagia Sophia is renowned for its massive dome, stunning Byzantine mosaics, and unique blend of Christian and Islamic art, making it a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a symbol of Istanbul’s rich history.
